A Day in My Life Reflection Essay

For this assignment, we used three software programs to document a day in our lives. The first program we explored was a word processor, Microsoft Word. A word processor allows computer users to input text and format the text. Covaleski (2020) explains that word processing technology was created solely for business purposes, but they are now used in households and offices alike. The second program we used was a spreadsheet application called Microsoft Excel. According to Vahid and Lysecky (2019), spreadsheets are commonly used for data tables, graphs, and mathematical purposes referred to as formulas. Spreadsheets allow a user to input numbers and text into cells, enabling you to manipulate and present the data in numerous ways. The last program we used was a slideshow presentation through a program called Microsoft PowerPoint. LeFebvre et al. (2022) describe, “PowerPoint’s slide templates and themes allow the user to adlib, invent, and create unique visual narratives[…]” (para. 3). Slideshows are multiple pages of content used to display information that usually assists the user in presentations. Overall, the three programs enable the computer user to perform various tasks.

A word processor is convenient for most writing purposes. It is best used when the user needs a writing program, but that is all it provides. For example, a business may use a word processor to issue a company-wide memo.

A spreadsheet works best for mathematical purposes. They are best when a computer user needs to display and work with numerical data, but it is not great for presenting information other than data. Companies often use spreadsheets to keep track of different inventory and pricing statistics.

Slideshow presentations are appropriate when somebody needs to display a presentation while explaining the information on the slides. A presentation is best used when somebody must present new information and needs the help of a visual representation. Presentations are not appropriate for interpersonal communication purposes.

There was not one single most useful tool among the three; the word processor, the spreadsheet, and the slideshow presentation all had their purpose. The word processor helped document what I did specifically with my day. The spreadsheet facilitated me to determine exactly how I spent my time and broke it down into percentages. The slideshow presentation allowed me to put together the information I obtained from the word processor and the spreadsheet. These software programs are helpful and provide computer users with valuable tools that can be used in a business or home.
